Calcite - Scalenohedron with Rhombohedron Faces
Based on a specimen from Joplin, MO
The calcite crystal this model is based on has an attractive combination of forms, with the added bonus of a sharp orange phantom inside. On the surface, the faces of the rhombohedron {02.1} bevel the edges of the scalenohedron {21.1}, while the phantom appears to be the scalenohedron alone. This model shows only the surface forms, although I am contemplating the future construction of a glass or plexiglass model with a visible phantom model suspended inside.
I find calcite crystals particularly beautiful, and they come in such an astounding variety of tempting forms that it’s literally impossible for me to go to a mineral show without purchasing at least one. I acquired this one for the bargain price of $2.50 in 2013, making it one of the cheapest specimens in my collection. But I firmly believe that the real worth of a specimen doesn’t come from its size, color, or transparency, but instead lies in the enjoyment and intellectual satisfaction it provides. Judged by that standard, this crystal holds its own against any of my more costly specimens.
Model details: 7.5" from tip to tip. Scalenohedron faces are English walnut, and rhombohedron faces are flame maple.
